Ted Lilly

Last offseason, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry took a huge risk by thinking that Prior and Wood could be healthy starters… that plan did not exactly happen… Instead we had a rotation of Zambrano, Maddux, Glendon Rusch, Jerome Williams, and Sean Marshall (along with A LOT of rookie pitchers that went from the majors to the minors repeatedly). This year, Mr. Hendry did not make the same mistake. On December 6th, 2006, the Cubs signed Ted Lilly to a 4-year, 40 million dollar deal. It is a little pricey for an aging pitcher who is a barely above average, but I don’t write the checks, so I’m happy. Ted Lilly will either be the #2 or #3 starter, pending on the health of Mark Prior. If Mark Prior is healthy the rotation could be very solid:

1)Carlos Zambrano

2)Mark Prior

3)Ted Lilly

4)Rich Hill

5)Jason Marquis

Overall, I think the Lilly signing is a good deal and I am hoping that Lilly can make a Bronson Arroyo-esque transition from the AL to the NL.
